A globally hyperbolic moment system up to arbitrary order for the Wigner equation was derived in [6]. For numerically solving the high order hyperbolic moment system therein, we in this paper develop a preliminary numerical method for this system following the NR$xx$ method recently proposed in [8], to validate the moment system of the Wigner equation. The developed method can keep both mass and momentum conserved, and the variation of the total energy under control though it is not strictly conservative. We systematically study the numerical convergence of the solution to the moment system both in the size of spatial mesh and in the order of the moment expansion, and the convergence of the numerical solution of the moment system to the numerical solution of the Wigner equation using the discrete velocity method. The numerical results indicate that the high order moment system in [6] is a valid model for the Wigner equation, and the proposed numerical method for the moment system is quite promising to carry out the simulation of the Wigner equation.

This paper investigates the chaotic lid-driven square cavity flows at extreme Reynolds numbers. Several observations have been made from this study. Firstly, at extreme Reynolds numbers two principles add at the genesis of tiny, loose counterclockwise- or clockwise-rotating eddies. One concerns the arousing of them owing to the influence of the clockwise- or counterclockwise currents nearby; the other, the arousing of counterclockwise-rotating eddies near attached to the moving (lid) top wall which moves from left to right. Secondly, unexpectedly, the kinetic energy soon reaches the qualitative temporal limit's pace, fluctuating briskly, randomly inside the total kinetic energy range, fluctuations which concentrate on two distinct fragments: one on its upper side, the upper fragment, the other on its lower side, the lower fragment, switching briskly, randomly from each other; and further on many small fragments arousing randomly within both, switching briskly, randomly from one another. As the Reynolds number Re→∞, both distance and then close, and the kinetic energy fluctuates shorter and shorter at the upper fragment and longer and longer at the lower fragment, displaying tall high spikes which enlarge and then disappear. As the time t→∞ (at the Reynolds number Re fixed) they recur from time to time with roughly the same amplitude. For the most part, at the upper fragment the leading eddy rotates clockwise, and at the lower fragment, in stark contrast, it rotates counterclockwise. At Re=10⁹ the leading eddy — at its qualitative temporal limit's pace — appears to rotate solely counterclockwise.

In this paper, a new numerical method for solving the decoupled forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs) is proposed based on some specially derived reference equations. We rigorously analyze errors of the proposed method under general situations. Then we present error estimates for each of the specific cases when some classical numerical schemes for solving the forward SDE are taken in the method; in particular, we prove that the proposed method is second-order accurate if used together with the order-2.0 weak Taylor scheme for the SDE. Some examples are also given to numerically demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method and verify the theoretical results.

Numerical error caused by "ghost forces" in a quasicontinuum method is studied in the context of dynamic problems. The error in the discrete W^1,∞ norm is analyzed for the time scale $\mathcal{O}$($ε$) and the time scale $\mathcal{O}$(1) with ε being the lattice spacing.

This study aims to investigate turbulent plasma flow using the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method. A double population model D2Q9-D2Q4 is employed to calculate the plasma velocity and temperature fields. Along with the calculation process a conversion procedure is made between the LB and the physical unit systems, so that thermo-physical properties variation is fully accounted for and the convergence is checked in physical space. The configuration domain and the boundary condition treatment are selected based on the most cited studies in order to illustrate a realistic situation. The jet morphology analysis gives credible results by comparison with commonly published works. It was demonstrated also that accounting for the substrate as wall boundary condition modify greatly the flow and temperature structures with may affect absolutely the particles behavior during its in-flight in the hot gas.

In this paper, we propose a wavelet collocation splitting (WCS) method, and a Fourier pseudospectral splitting (FPSS) method as comparison, for solving one-dimensional and two-dimensional Schrödinger equations with variable coefficients in quantum mechanics. The two methods can preserve the intrinsic properties of original problems as much as possible. The splitting technique increases the computational efficiency. Meanwhile, the error estimation and some conservative properties are investigated. It is proved to preserve the charge conservation exactly. The global energy and momentum conservation laws can be preserved under several conditions. Numerical experiments are conducted during long time computations to show the performances of the proposed methods and verify the theoretical analysis.

In this paper we perform a numerical study of the spectra, eigenstates, and Lyapunov exponents of the skew-shift counterpart to Harper's equation. This study is motivated by various conjectures on the spectral theory of these 'pseudo-random' models, which are reviewed in detail in the initial sections of the paper. The numerics carried out at different scales are within agreement with the conjectures and show a striking difference compared with the spectral features of the Almost Mathieu model. In particular our numerics establish a small upper bound on the gaps in the spectrum (conjectured to be absent).

In this paper we use the Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method (GMsFEM) framework, introduced in [26], in order to solve nonlinear elliptic equations with high-contrast coefficients. The proposed solution method involves linearizing the equation so that coarse-grid quantities of previous solution iterates can be regarded as auxiliary parameters within the problem formulation. With this convention, we systematically construct respective coarse solution spaces that lend themselves to either continuous Galerkin (CG) or discontinuous Galerkin (DG) global formulations. Here, we use Symmetric Interior Penalty Discontinuous Galerkin approach. Both methods yield a predictable error decline that depends on the respective coarse space dimension, and we illustrate the effectiveness of the CG and DG formulations by offering a variety of numerical examples.

Numerical simulation of stratified flow of two fluids between two infinite parallel plates using the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method is presented. The developing process from entrance to fully development flow is captured. In the simulation, the computational domain is represented by various types of particles. Governing equations are described based on particles and their interactions. Grids are not necessary in any calculation steps of the simulation. The particle number density is implicitly required to be constant to satisfy incompressibility. The weight function is used to describe the interaction between different particles. The particle is considered to constitute the free interface if the particle number density is below a set point. Results for various combinations of density, viscosity, mass flow rates, and distance between the two parallel plates are presented. The proposed procedure is validated using the derived exact solution and the earlier numerical results from the Level-Set method. Furthermore, the evolution of the interface in the developing region is captured and compares well with the derived exact solutions in the developed region.

This paper investigates the eigenmode optimization problem governed by the scalar Helmholtz equation in continuum system in which the computed eigenmode approaches the prescribed eigenmode in the whole domain. The first variation for the eigenmode optimization problem is evaluated by the quadratic penalty method, the adjoint variable method, and the formula based on sensitivity analysis. A penalty optimization algorithm is proposed, in which the density evolution is accomplished by introducing an artificial time term and solving an additional ordinary differential equation. The validity of the presented algorithm is confirmed by numerical results of the first and second eigenmode optimizations in 1D and 2D problems.

This paper presents two uniformly convergent numerical schemes for the two dimensional steady state discrete ordinates transport equation in the diffusive regime, which is valid up to the boundary and interface layers. A five-point node-centered and a four-point cell-centered tailored finite point schemes (TFPS) are introduced. The schemes first approximate the scattering coefficients and sources by piecewise constant functions and then use special solutions to the constant coefficient equation as local basis functions to formulate a discrete linear system. Numerically, both methods can not only capture the diffusion limit, but also exhibit uniform convergence in the diffusive regime, even with boundary layers. Numerical results show that the five-point scheme has first-order accuracy and the four-point scheme has second-order accuracy, uniformly with respect to the mean free path. Therefore, a relatively coarse grid can be used to capture the two dimensional boundary and interface layers.

We consider the relativistic Euler equations governing spherically symmetric, perfect fluid flows on the outer domain of communication of Schwarzschild spacetime, and we introduce a version of the finite volume method which is formulated from the geometric formulation (and thus takes the geometry into account at the discretization level) and is well-balanced, in the sense that it preserves steady solutions to the Euler equations on the curved geometry under consideration. In order to formulate our method, we first derive a closed formula describing all steady and spherically symmetric solutions to the Euler equations posed on Schwarzschild spacetime. Second, we describe a geometry-preserving, finite volume method which is based on the family of steady solutions to the Euler system. Our scheme is second-order accurate and, as required, preserves the family of steady solutions at the discrete level. Numerical experiments are presented which demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of the proposed method even for solutions containing shock waves and nonlinear interacting wave patterns. As an application, we investigate the late-time asymptotics of perturbed steady solutions and demonstrate its convergence for late time toward another steady solution, taking the overall effect of the perturbation into account.
